Evol is the third studio album by Sonic Youth, released in 1986 through SST Records. It marked a turning point in the New York band's career, incorporating more melodic structures into their signature experimental noise, and was the first record to feature drummer Steve Shelley. Considered a pillar of 80s noise rock and alternative rock, Evol laid the foundation for the sound the band would perfect on later albums like Sister and Daydream Nation.
