What's Going On is the eleventh studio album by Marvin Gaye, released in 1971 by the Tamla (Motown) label and conceived as a concept work recorded almost as a single continuous piece. Producer Berry Gordy initially considered it the least commercial record Motown had ever recorded, but Gaye maintained his original vision, inspired by letters from his brother Frankie during the Vietnam War and episodes of police violence he witnessed in Berkeley. The album is recognized as a turning point in the history of the label and soul music, with tracks like 'Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)' and 'Inner City Blues (Make Me Wanna Holler)'.
