Arular is the debut album by M.I.A., released in 2005 by XL Recordings and titled in reference to her father, who was linked to the Tamil resistance in Sri Lanka. Recorded with a DIY aesthetic, it combines dancehall, grime, and home-produced electronica on tracks like "Galang" and "Sunshowers," laying the foundation for the sound the artist would develop on later albums.
